Cook County, IL – Illinois State Police (ISP) announced the arrest of a Chicago man in connection with a 2024 expressway shooting on Interstate 55 that left one driver seriously injured.

According to ISP, 27-year-old James G. Sims of Chicago was arrested October 9, 2025, and charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony. The charge stems from an alleged road rage incident that occurred October 2, 2024, on I-55 northbound near Kedzie Avenue.

Police say a dispute between drivers of a Ford and an Audi led to gunfire. The Audi driver reportedly suffered multiple gunshot wounds and crashed into a light pole before being taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The Ford was later found abandoned and had been reported stolen before the shooting.

After a year-long investigation, ISP Special Agents identified Sims as a suspect. He was taken into custody without incident and later charged after the case was presented to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Sims remains held pending his first court hearing.

Authorities have not released additional details about the investigation.

The charge is not evidence of guilt, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
