Hartford, Connecticut — A late-season cold snap will push into Connecticut early Friday, May 8, bringing freezing overnight temperatures, gusty winds, and periods of rain that will impact travel and outdoor activity across Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, Bridgeport, and Waterbury.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, temperatures will run 50–60% below normal through May 14, with the coldest air settling in Friday night. The most critical window is from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday, when temperatures are expected to drop to or near freezing statewide.

That drop will create immediate impacts. Frost is likely to develop on elevated surfaces, including bridges and ramps along I-84 and I-95, increasing the risk of slick travel during the early morning commute. In inland areas like Waterbury and Hartford, colder pockets could linger longer, raising the risk of plant damage and exposing early-morning workers to near-freezing conditions.

Rain will move in Friday night into Saturday, leading to wet roads and reduced visibility. Water can quickly pool in low-lying areas, including underpasses in New Haven and flood-prone intersections in Bridgeport, creating hazardous driving conditions within minutes of heavier showers.

Winds will strengthen Saturday into Sunday, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph. Those winds could bring down small branches and lead to isolated power outages, especially along the coast and in tree-lined neighborhoods.

Drivers should slow down on wet roads, especially before sunrise when frost may form, and avoid driving through water-covered streets. Residents should cover sensitive plants and secure outdoor items ahead of the wind.

The highest risk for freezing temperatures and travel disruptions peaks early Saturday between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.
