Denver, CO – Colorado’s new phone law will ban handheld device use while driving starting January 1, 2025, officials announced. Drivers must switch to hands-free accessories or face penalties.

The Colorado Department of Transportation reports the law is designed to reduce distracted driving and save lives. Starting in 2025, holding or manually using a phone while driving will be illegal, though hands-free accessories such as Bluetooth headsets or dashboard mounts are allowed.

First-time violators will face a $75 fine and two license points. Repeat offenses carry higher fines and additional points. Drivers can have charges dropped if they provide proof of purchasing a hands-free device after their first violation.

Exceptions include emergencies, first responders, utility workers, and parked vehicles. Teens under 18 face stricter rules, as they cannot use phones at all while driving.

Officials urge drivers to prepare by installing hands-free systems like CarPlay, Android Auto, or phone mounts. By adhering to the law, drivers can avoid fines and help make roads safer statewide.
