Craig, CO – A Freeze Warning is in effect overnight across Colorado’s Central Yampa River Basin as temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing by early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, temperatures could fall as low as 26 degrees between midnight and 10 a.m. Friday, creating dangerous conditions for sensitive vegetation and outdoor plumbing.

The warning includes Craig, Hayden, Meeker, and surrounding portions of northwest Colorado.

Forecasters said frost and prolonged freezing temperatures could kill crops, damage gardens, and harm other tender outdoor plants. Unprotected irrigation systems and exposed pipes may also be vulnerable if temperatures remain below freezing for several hours.

The late-season freeze arrives as many residents have already begun spring planting across the Yampa River Basin. Agricultural impacts could be significant in colder valleys and low-lying rural areas where temperatures typically drop fastest overnight.

Residents are encouraged to cover sensitive plants, disconnect hoses, and protect exposed plumbing before temperatures plunge overnight. Gardeners may also want to move potted plants indoors until temperatures recover Friday afternoon.

Clear skies and light winds are expected to help temperatures rapidly cool after sunset, increasing the likelihood of widespread frost formation by dawn.

Additional cold-weather advisories could be issued if freezing temperatures persist into the holiday weekend.
