Caribou, ME – A Frost Advisory has been issued for parts of northern and central Maine from midnight tonight through 7 a.m. Saturday as temperatures are expected to fall into the low to mid-30s.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, frost formation is likely across Northeast Aroostook, Southeast Aroostook, Northern Penobscot, and Central Piscataquis counties overnight into early Saturday morning.
Communities included in the advisory include Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, Greenville, Millinocket, Patten, Ashland, Mars Hill, Van Buren, East Millinocket, Monson, Sherman, Smyrna Mills, Hodgdon, and surrounding areas.
Forecasters said the cold overnight temperatures could harm or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left unprotected. Garden plants, flowers, and other tender crops are especially vulnerable during late-season frost events.
Residents are encouraged to cover delicate plants or bring potted vegetation indoors before temperatures drop overnight. Frost typically forms under clear skies and calm winds when temperatures near the freezing mark.
The advisory follows cool conditions across northern Maine this week, with chilly overnight lows continuing despite warmer daytime temperatures expected heading into the holiday weekend.
Motorists traveling early Saturday morning should also be prepared for localized reduced visibility in low-lying areas where patchy fog may develop alongside colder temperatures.
Additional weather updates and advisories may be issued if colder temperatures expand farther south overnight.
