Coal City, IL – Residents near Jugtown Road reported a natural gas odor Monday morning, prompting immediate safety checks by local officials.
According to Unit District #1 Coal City, the smell stemmed from a company changing a pump at a natural gas substation. Officials confirmed there was no gas leak. Instead, the odor resulted from mercaptan, a harmless chemical added to natural gas to help detect leaks.
The Coal City Fire Protection District thoroughly inspected the area and surrounding facilities. Their investigation confirmed no leaks, and officials assured the community of its safety.
Mercaptan, while non-toxic, produces a strong odor similar to rotten eggs. It is designed to alert the public to possible leaks quickly. Officials remind residents that any suspected gas odors should be reported immediately for safety checks.
Coal City leaders commended the fire district and utility companies for their quick response. Safety remains a top priority for the district and emergency responders.
Residents are encouraged to report any unusual smells or concerns to local authorities. Staying vigilant ensures ongoing community safety and preparedness.
