Chillicothe, OH – A Chillicothe man was taken into custody following a traffic stop that allegedly led to the discovery of suspected narcotics and a loaded firearm, authorities said.

According to the U.S. 23 Major Crimes Task Force, the arrest happened Friday when deputies with the Ross County Sheriffโ€™s Office, working alongside the task force and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, initiated a stop that revealed alleged criminal indicators. A K-9 unit was called to assist, and a subsequent pat-down allegedly uncovered approximately 1.5 ounces of suspected fentanyl.

Investigators said a probable cause search of the vehicle allegedly led to the discovery of a handgun equipped with a drum magazine, along with a concealed magnetic box reportedly containing about 4 ounces of suspected cocaine. Authorities estimate the total value of the allegedly seized narcotics at nearly $17,000.

The suspect, identified as Joe Spencer, 45, of Chillicothe, was taken into custody and incarcerated. He is currently being held on a $500,000 bond and faces charges that allegedly include possession of narcotics and having weapons while under disability.

Officials also confirmed that another individual, identified as Larry Perry, was taken into custody by the Adult Parole Authority in connection with the investigation.

The U.S. 23 Major Crimes Task Force, which serves multiple counties across Appalachian Ohio, said it continues to focus on collaborative enforcement efforts aimed at reducing drug trafficking and improving public safety. Authorities emphasized that investigations like this one rely on coordinated resources, intelligence sharing, and proactive policing strategies.

The case remains under investigation, and all charges are allegations unless proven in court.
