Chicago, Illinois – Strong northwest winds are whipping up Lake Michigan this weekend, creating dangerous conditions for swimmers and boaters across northern Indiana and Illinois. The National Weather Service warns that waves of 3 to 5 feet and life-threatening currents will build Saturday evening and linger into early Sunday morning, especially near Porter County beaches and areas stretching from Gary to Chesterton.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, gusts behind a passing cold front will push hazardous currents toward the southern lakeshore. A high swim risk remains in effect for northern Indiana, while moderate risks stretch into the Chicago area. Residents are urged to avoid entering the water and to stay off breakwalls and piers, where waves could sweep people into the lake.
The front is also ushering in a much cooler air mass for late August. Highs will struggle to reach the low 70s Sunday and Monday, with overnight lows dipping into the 40s and 50s—well below seasonal norms. While most of the region will stay dry after Saturday’s scattered storms, lake-effect sprinkles could brush northwest Indiana early next week.
Hazardous swimming conditions are expected to ease by Sunday afternoon, but cooler temperatures will hold into midweek.
