Chicago, Illinois – April 2026 brought unusually warm and wet conditions across the Chicago metro area, with the month ranking among the warmest and wettest on record.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago office, O’Hare International Airport recorded an average temperature of 53.8°F, which is 4.1 degrees above normal. The month ranked as the seventh warmest April on record for the city.

Rainfall totals were also significantly above average. Chicago recorded 7.19 inches of precipitation during the month—more than 3.4 inches above normal—making it the seventh wettest April on record. Rockford saw similar conditions, with 6.46 inches of rain, nearly 2.7 inches above normal.

Meteorologists noted that an active weather pattern contributed to repeated rain events throughout the month, leading to widespread above-normal precipitation across northern Illinois. Maps released by the agency show much of the region receiving well over 150% of typical April rainfall.

Despite the active pattern, snowfall was nearly nonexistent. Chicago recorded no measurable snow for the month, which is about 1.3 inches below normal, while Rockford reported only a trace.

Officials say the combination of warmer temperatures and frequent rainfall created a notably mild and wet spring pattern heading into May. The trend could have impacts on soil moisture levels, river conditions, and early-season planting across the region.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on changing weather patterns as the region transitions into the late spring season.
