A dense fog advisory is in effect for much of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana until 9 a.m. Friday, reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, visibility has dropped to less than one-quarter mile in some areas, including Chicago, Rockford, Joliet, and Gary. Affected counties include Cook, DuPage, Lake, McHenry, and Kane in Illinois, along with Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton in Indiana.

Drivers should use caution, reduce speed, and turn on low-beam headlights. The advisory warns of rapidly changing visibility, which could make roads especially dangerous during the morning commute.

The fog is expected to persist into the morning before widespread rain moves in, improving visibility. Motorists can check with the Illinois and Indiana Departments of Transportation for real-time road conditions.
