Champaign, IL – If you see firefighters in hazmat suits at Sholem Aquatic Center today, there’s no need for alarm. The Champaign Fire Department is conducting training exercises at the facility, starting at 8:30 a.m. Residents may notice a significant presence of fire trucks and personnel as part of the drill.
According to the Champaign Fire Department, these exercises help firefighters prepare for hazardous material incidents. The department’s team will simulate emergency scenarios that require specialized equipment and techniques. These drills ensure firefighters can safely and efficiently respond if a real hazmat situation arises in the community.
Additional training sessions will be held on Wednesday and Friday at 2205 Sangamon Drive, where similar precautions and setups will occur. The department urges the public not to be concerned by the sight of hazmat suits or multiple emergency vehicles.
Residents are encouraged to stay clear of these areas to allow firefighters to complete their training safely. The drills are essential for keeping the community prepared for emergencies.
