Binghamton, N.Y. – A late-summer chill settled across upstate New York Wednesday, dropping afternoon highs into the 50s and low 60s, a temperature swing more typical of mid-October than August. The unusually cool air had some residents reaching for jackets while scattered light showers added to the damp feel.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, much of central and southern New York remained locked in the 50s by mid-afternoon. Syracuse reported 59 degrees at 2 p.m., Utica only 56, while Binghamton held steady at 65. Farther south, Elmira and Ithaca topped out near 66, but even those readings ran well below seasonal averages.

The cool air mass brought showers earlier in the day, but forecasters said the rainfall had thinned by late afternoon, leaving only spotty sprinkles across the Southern Tier and Catskills. Motorists may still encounter slick patches on rural roads, but widespread impacts are limited.

Residents should expect the chill to linger into the evening, with overnight lows dipping into the 40s in higher terrain. The National Weather Service noted temperatures will gradually rebound by late week, but unseasonably cool conditions will continue through Thursday.
