According to the National Weather Service, scattered hail up to the size of ping pong balls and wind gusts reaching 70 mph are likely. The affected areas include Iowa City, Burlington, Fort Madison, Muscatine, and Quincy. Frequent lightning is also anticipated, posing additional risks.
Residents in the watch area, which includes a population of approximately 532,856, are advised to stay indoors and secure outdoor objects. Schools and hospitals within the region should prepare for potential disruptions.
In addition to the thunderstorm watch, St. Louis is under an excessive heat warning until 7 PM Thursday. With temperatures expected to reach 97°F today, residents should take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
