Lincoln, IL – Residents across central Illinois are facing dangerously cold conditions as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a Cold Weather Advisory from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Wind chills as low as 25 below zero are expected during the warning period, posing a severe risk of frostbite within 30 minutes of exposure. The advisory period will bring wind chills as low as 18 below zero, continuing to create hazardous conditions overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Tazewell, and McLean counties. Cities such as Galesburg, Bloomington, Peoria, and Normal are among those under advisory.

Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity and dress in layers with hats, gloves, and face masks if venturing outside. To prevent frozen water pipes, homeowners are advised to insulate pipes, allow faucets to drip, or drain systems entirely.

The extreme cold could create travel hazards and heightened risks for those without shelter. Warming centers may be available in local areas; residents are encouraged to check with community resources for assistance.
