Alabama, FL – Extreme cold temperatures have gripped the Gulf Coast, triggering an urgent warning for residents to take precautions.

The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Cold Warning for parts of Alabama, northwest Florida, and southeast Mississippi. Wind chills as low as 3 degrees above zero will persist until Wednesday at 10 a.m.

According to the warning, exposed skin risks frostbite and hypothermia. Extended freezing could rupture water pipes. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and keep pets indoors. Outdoor animals should have warm, dry shelter and access to unfrozen water.

Safety measures include running water pipes slowly, ensuring portable heaters are used correctly, and avoiding generators indoors. Vulnerable individuals, including older adults and neighbors, should be checked frequently during this cold snap.

Temperatures are expected to moderate after Wednesday morning. For now, officials stress remaining indoors and minimizing unnecessary exposure to freezing conditions.

Residents across the affected areas, including Mobile, Pensacola, and Gulf Shores, are advised to stay updated on local conditions and adhere to safety precautions.
