Springfield, Ill. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms will roll across Illinois this week as a slow-moving storm system drifts through the Midwest, bringing the best chances for downpours near and south of Interstate 70. Some areas could see more than two inches of rain by midweek, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

The agency reports that the heaviest rainfall will fall Monday through Tuesday, with widespread showers expected each day through Friday. While southern and central counties, including Effingham, Shelby, and Fayette, carry the highest risk for flooding rain, all of Illinois should benefit from the moisture after weeks of dry conditions.

Drivers should prepare for reduced visibility and ponding on roadways, especially during the morning and evening commutes. Residents are advised to avoid flooded intersections and monitor local advisories for flash flood watches that may be issued if rainfall totals climb quickly.

Temperatures will also trend back toward seasonal norms, staying mostly in the mid to upper 70s statewide. Storm chances taper later in the week, but unsettled skies remain possible into Friday.

Warnings could be extended if rainfall lingers longer than expected, keeping much of Illinois on alert through the workweek.
