Champaign, IL – Central Illinois residents south of I-70 should brace for thunderstorms early next week, following a few days of smoky sunshine and muggy conditions.

According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, smoke from Canadian prairie wildfires will continue to mute the sunshine into the weekend. Areas south of I-70 will experience partly cloudy conditions as we head deeper into the weekend, with increasing humidity.

Today, temperatures are expected to range from 82 to 86 degrees under smoke-tinged skies. Saturday will see temperatures rise slightly to between 86 and 89 degrees. Sunday brings a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with highs between 82 and 85 degrees.

As we move into next week, Monday will be particularly muggy with temperatures reaching 87-90 degrees and a 40% chance of thunderstorms. Tuesday will continue the trend with highs of 89-91 degrees and additional thunderstorm activity.

Residents should prepare for unsettled weather as thunderstorms return in earnest early next week. It’s advisable to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and be ready for potential weather disruptions. The air quality index remains good for now, but it is essential to monitor any changes due to ongoing smoke conditions.
