Springfield, IL – A slow-moving weather system is set to deliver multiple rounds of heavy rainfall across central and southeast Illinois starting late Friday, with the potential for urban flash flooding through Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the first wave of rain is expected between 3 a.m. and noon Saturday, followed by a second round from 3 p.m. Sunday through midnight. Forecast maps show rainfall totals ranging from 1.5 inches in northern cities like Galesburg and Pontiac to as much as 4 inches near Litchfield.

The storms are likely to be slow-moving and could repeatedly track over the same areas, a condition known as “training.” This increases the risk for flash flooding, especially in urban areas and low-lying regions. Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Effingham, and Edwardsville may see 2 to 3 inches or more of rain.

Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and avoid flooded roadways. Swollen ditches, creeks, and widespread ponding could pose dangers throughout the weekend. The National Weather Service advises checking future forecasts and preparing for potential disruptions to travel and outdoor plans.

Stay alert for further updates as conditions may evolve quickly with each storm round.
