Des Moines, Iowa – Travel across central Iowa remains risky through Sunday as light snow, strong winds, and bitter cold combine to create slick roads and sudden visibility drops, especially on open highways and interstates around the metro.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, light snow continues at times Sunday with minimal accumulation, but northwest winds gusting near 40 mph will cause blowing snow and localized whiteout conditions. Even small amounts of snow are expected to make roads slick, particularly on I-35, I-80, and rural routes north and east of the city.

High temperatures Sunday struggle to climb out of the single digits to low teens, limiting any melting. By Sunday afternoon and evening, scattered snow showers and increasing wind will allow snow to drift back across previously cleared lanes. Bridges, ramps, and untreated roads are expected to ice over quickly.

Conditions worsen Sunday night as colder air pours in behind a reinforcing cold front. Wind chills by early Monday morning are expected to plunge between 15 and 25 degrees below zero, increasing the risk for stranded motorists and mechanical issues.

Drivers are urged to slow down, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of blowing snow. Another update is expected as the cold and wind remain locked in into early next week.
