Champaign, IL – A powerful winter storm is set to impact central Illinois tonight, with gusty winds and heavy snow causing dangerous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until Monday at noon, advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Blowing and drifting snow will make roads hazardous, especially near I-72 and other major highways.
According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulation tonight will reach up to 4 inches, with wind gusts over 30 mph creating whiteout conditions. Areas south of I-70 may experience a mix of snow and freezing drizzle, further increasing the risk of icy roads. Drivers are urged to use caution, as visibility will remain low through Monday morning.
Monday will see lingering snow showers and gusty winds, with temperatures hovering between 23°F and 29°F. The wind chill could drop into single digits, making it dangerous for prolonged outdoor exposure. By Tuesday, the weather will stabilize, with partly sunny skies and a high of 25°F, but cold air will persist midweek, with lows dropping to near 7°F.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local officials and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Check road conditions before traveling and keep an emergency kit in your car.
