Champaign, IL – A winter storm continues to impact central Illinois, creating hazardous conditions on major roadways, including I-55 and I-72. Heavy snow and gusty winds early Monday morning have led to low visibility and icy roads.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will taper off by noon, but blowing snow will continue to create whiteouts in open and rural areas. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for slippery roads. Snow accumulation of up to three inches is expected south of I-74, with winds gusting up to 30 mph.
Monday afternoon will bring cloudy skies with temperatures around 27°F. However, conditions will worsen midweek as a blast of Arctic air arrives. Tuesday night and Wednesday are forecasted to bring lows in the single digits, with wind chills plunging below zero. Gusty winds will persist, making outdoor exposure dangerous.
This week’s forecast includes partly sunny skies Tuesday, with highs near 23°F. Wednesday and Thursday will remain cold but dry, with daytime highs in the teens and nighttime lows near 4°F. Residents should dress in layers and limit time outdoors during the coldest periods.
