Lincoln, IL – Central Illinois is set to experience dangerously high temperatures this afternoon, particularly south of I-72, as an advancing cold front approaches. Residents in these areas should prepare for heat indices ranging from 100 to 105°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning, urging caution for those who must be outside.
According to the NWS, the heat wave will affect most locations south of I-72 and east of I-55, with the highest temperatures expected in cities such as Effingham, Litchfield, and Edwardsville. Hydration, light clothing, and limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours are strongly recommended.
The NWS forecasts that this intense heat will be followed by a cold front moving into southern Illinois by the evening, bringing cooler temperatures and cloudy skies. “Temperatures will begin to moderate north of the line from Bloomington to Jacksonville today,” the NWS reported.
Expect highs between 81 and 94°F today, with temperatures cooling to 77-81°F on Wednesday. The cold front will leave breezy north winds in its wake, offering much-needed relief. The rest of the week will see highs in the low to mid-80s, with nights cooling to the mid-50s to low 60s.
Eastern Illinois may see a few showers or storms this afternoon before the cooler weather sets in. The remainder of the week promises precipitation-free conditions with moderate air quality. Residents should continue to stay informed via local weather updates as conditions develop.
