BOISE, Idaho – Residents in the Boise and West Central Mountains are on alert for potential flash flooding as a significant storm system approaches the region. Heavy rainfall expected Wednesday afternoon could overwhelm creeks, streams, and recently burned areas, creating a dangerous situation for several mountain communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, a Flood Watch is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday evening for portions of southwest Idaho, including the Boise and West Central Mountains. The watch specifically highlights the Wapiti Burn Scar, including a portion of Idaho State Highway 21, as an area of heightened concern. Cities within the watch area include McCall, Cascade, Pine, and Warm Lake.
Officials warn that excessive rainfall on the burn scar could lead to rapid runoff and debris flows. Hot wildfires can create a water-repellent layer on the soil, preventing rain from being absorbed and increasing the risk of sudden flooding in low-lying areas. This condition makes flash flooding possible even with short, intense downpours.
Residents and travelers in the affected regions are advised to monitor weather updates closely. Motorists on Highway 21 should be particularly cautious of potential washouts and debris on the roadway. Authorities urge everyone to be prepared to take action if a Flash Flood Warning is issued.
