Richmond, VA – A weekend of strong to severe storms is expected across much of Virginia, with damaging winds threatening outdoor plans Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, isolated thunderstorms may begin late Friday in the Piedmont, but widespread showers and storms are likely both weekend days. The most intense storms are expected Saturday and Sunday evening, particularly across central and southeastern Virginia.

Cities like Richmond, Petersburg, and Newport News could see repeated rounds of storms, some bringing downpours, gusty winds, and lightning. Damaging winds are the main threat, with scattered power outages or fallen limbs possible. Beachgoers along the coast should note a moderate risk of rip currents Friday, decreasing to low risk through the weekend.

If you’re heading outdoors, stay weather-aware and prepare for rapid changes. Avoid boating or swimming during storm threats and secure loose items ahead of wind gusts. Check local alerts frequently as storms may strengthen quickly.

Storm chances continue into Sunday night, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
