Birmingham, AL – Snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures are expected across central Alabama today and into Wednesday morning, prompting travel and safety advisories. Snow accumulations of 1-2 inches are forecast in areas south of I-85, including Montgomery, Auburn, and Troy.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for southern Alabama, with a Winter Weather Advisory covering central regions. Drivers should prepare for slippery roads, particularly during late afternoon and evening hours when snow will begin accumulating. Northern areas, including Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, are expected to see minimal snow but could still face icy conditions.
A Cold Weather Advisory is also in place for all of central Alabama until Wednesday at 9 a.m. Wind chills as low as 5°F could cause frostbite or hypothermia for anyone exposed to the elements without proper clothing. Residents are advised to wear heavy layers, keep pets indoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The five-day forecast predicts improving conditions after the storm passes. Wednesday will be sunny with highs near 37°F, but overnight lows will remain frigid at 20°F. Thursday and Friday bring sunshine, with daytime highs rising to the mid-40s.
Officials urge caution on roads, especially along I-85 and US-231, where snowfall may lead to hazardous driving conditions. Travelers are encouraged to monitor updates and avoid unnecessary trips.
