Reno, NV – A powerful winter storm is set to impact California’s Sierra Nevada region, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected from late Tuesday through Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Mono County, the Greater Lake Tahoe Area, and Lassen-Eastern Plumas-Eastern Sierra Counties. Snowfall accumulations along the Sierra crest could reach up to 4 feet at the highest peaks, while lower elevations along U.S. 395 may see between 6 to 18 inches of snow. Ridge winds are forecasted to gust as high as 70 mph, with Lake Tahoe experiencing winds up to 40 mph, potentially producing waves between 2 to 4 feet.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, making driving difficult to impossible in some areas. The storm is anticipated to significantly impact the Wednesday and Thursday morning and evening commutes. Whiteout conditions due to blowing snow and strong winds could lead to road closures and power outages.

Residents and travelers are advised to take precautions, including keeping emergency supplies such as flashlights, food, and water in their vehicles. For up-to-date road conditions, travelers should call 511 or check local advisories.

This storm follows a series of winter systems impacting California’s mountain regions, further stressing infrastructure and travel in the area.
