California — Waves crash harder than they look this morning, and the ocean feels deceptively calm before turning dangerous along Bay Area beaches.

According to the National Weather Service, a long-period northwest swell will build through Saturday morning and persist into Sunday evening, increasing the risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents along the Pacific Coast .

The most dangerous window develops from late Saturday morning through Sunday evening, when waves can surge suddenly far up the shoreline. Beaches across San Francisco, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, Monterey, and Santa Cruz face the highest risk, especially near jetties, rocky outcrops, and low-lying shoreline access points.

This is part of a broader coastal pattern where distant Pacific storms send powerful energy toward California, creating waves that appear spaced out but arrive with force.

Impacts go beyond the shoreline. Sneaker waves can knock people off rocks and pull them into the water within seconds. Rip currents may quickly drag swimmers offshore, even in areas that appear calm. Along Highway 1, drivers stopping at scenic pull-offs may encounter hazardous conditions near cliffs and beach access points.

Avoid turning your back on the ocean. Stay off rocks, jetties, and piers where waves can sweep across without warning. Keep a safe distance from the waterline, especially in low-lying beach areas prone to sudden surges.

Conditions remain relatively calm inland, with highs in the mid-60s to upper 60s through early next week. A slight chance of light rain develops Monday morning before clearing returns.

Five-Day Outlook for San Francisco:
Saturday: High 65, increasing clouds
Sunday: High 66, partly sunny
Monday: High 66, slight rain early
Tuesday: High 67, partly sunny
Wednesday: High 68, mostly sunny
