Silver Springs, Nevada – A stronger earthquake has now been confirmed in an early morning swarm that shook western Nevada Thursday, with the largest event upgraded to magnitude 5.2 near Silver Springs in Lyon County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 5.2 quake struck at 8:17 a.m. UTC (1:17 a.m. local time) about 19 kilometers southeast of Silver Springs at a shallow depth of approximately 5.0 kilometers—making it more likely to be felt across a wider area including Carson City and parts of the Reno metro.

The updated magnitude replaces earlier reports of a 4.9 event, indicating a stronger mainshock within the cluster. Several smaller earthquakes followed, including magnitudes 4.1 and 2.6, all occurring within minutes in the same region (fix → area), confirming an earthquake swarm pattern typical of Nevada’s Basin and Range region.

Shake intensity reports reached level VI (“strong”), suggesting noticeable shaking capable of moving objects and causing minor damage, though early assessments indicate minimal impact. USGS data shows low risk for landslides, liquefaction, or widespread structural damage, with limited population exposure near the epicenter.

Earthquake swarms are relatively common in Nevada, but a magnitude above 5.0 marks a more significant event that can be felt across multiple counties. Residents reported brief but sharp shaking overnight, though no injuries or major damage have been confirmed as of Thursday morning.

Seismologists warn that aftershocks may continue throughout the day and possibly longer. Residents are encouraged to remain alert and review earthquake safety procedures.

Monitoring remains ongoing as elevated seismic activity continues in the region.
