Buffalo, N.Y. – Drivers along I-90 and I-190 should prepare for a brief wintry mix by 9 a.m. Tuesday as temperatures hover near 32 degrees before changing to light rain later in the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a warming trend begins Tuesday with highs reaching the upper 30s to lower 40s across western New York. Light rain will develop during the morning, but interior sections of the Southern Tier, including Jamestown and Wellsville, could see a short-lived mix of rain and wet snow at the onset.

Road surfaces along I-86 and higher terrain south of Buffalo may become slushy for a time early Tuesday before temperatures rise above freezing. Across the immediate Buffalo metro, precipitation should fall mainly as rain, limiting travel impacts to wet roads and reduced visibility.

Farther east of Lake Ontario, including Watertown and areas along I-81, a mix of lower elevation rain and higher elevation snow is expected. Snowfall totals should remain under 1 inch, but brief bursts could coat grassy and elevated surfaces.

Highs Tuesday range from the upper 30s near Rochester to the low 40s in Buffalo. Any early slick spots should improve by midday as pavement temperatures rise.

Motorists should allow extra travel time during the morning commute and remain alert for changing conditions, especially south of I-90 and east of Lake Ontario. The warming trend continues into midweek, with additional rain chances possible later in the week.
