Billings, MT – A fall storm system is expected to bring widespread rain and mountain snow to southern Montana and northern Wyoming through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say temperatures will cool into the 60s and 70s as the system lingers. There is a 50% to 85% chance of measurable rain across the region, with the Billings, Hardin, and Sheridan areas seeing the highest probabilities. While the chance of severe thunderstorms is considered low, residents should prepare for wet travel conditions and possible delays.
The Beartooth and Bighorn Mountains are forecast to see light accumulations of wet snow, especially above 10,000 feet. Between 1 and 3 inches are likely in many higher elevations, with up to 6 inches possible on the tallest peaks. The Beartooth Highway near the 10,947-foot summit may be impacted by wintry conditions, while lower elevations are expected to remain rain-only.
The NWS advises travelers with plans in the high country to use caution and be prepared for rapidly changing weather. Roads may become slick, particularly along mountain passes. The system is forecast to taper off by midweek.
