Baton Rouge, La. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Baton Rouge and much of southeast Louisiana until 9 p.m. Wednesday, as powerful storms move across the region with the potential for damaging winds and large hail.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers 14 parishes, including East Baton Rouge, Tangipahoa, Livingston, and St. Tammany. Storms could intensify during the late afternoon and early evening hours, with the highest risk for severe wind gusts exceeding 60 mph.

Drivers along I-10, I-12, and U.S. 190 should be alert for sudden downpours, reduced visibility, and debris on roadways. Local officials urge residents in areas like Hammond, Gonzales, and Slidell to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm activity. Power outages and tree damage are possible in the hardest-hit areas.

This is the first widespread severe thunderstorm watch in the region this month and comes as humidity and daytime heating fuel unstable conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts, charge mobile devices, and move vehicles away from large trees.

The storm threat continues through this evening, with additional watches or warnings possible if conditions worsen. Stay tuned to official channels for updates.
