Jackson, Miss. – A wide swath of Mississippi is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 p.m. Wednesday, with storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning from Jackson to the Gulf Coast.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, 28 counties—including Harrison, Forrest, Lamar, and Jackson—are included in Watch #344. The threat zone stretches across central and southern Mississippi, with severe cells moving northeast through late evening.

Cities like Hattiesburg, Biloxi, McComb, and Laurel could see wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency urges residents to secure outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Power outages are possible, particularly in areas with saturated ground from recent rain.

Major roadways including I-55, I-59, and U.S. 98 could see hazardous driving conditions during the evening commute. School districts and event organizers are advised to monitor local updates for any potential cancellations or delays.

This is Mississippi’s largest thunderstorm watch area so far this month. More warnings could follow if conditions worsen. Residents should remain weather-aware through the evening.
