La Porte, IN – A 54-year-old man is in critical condition after a reportedly brutal ax handle attack in a La Porte home. Deputies responded to a disturbance in the 4900 north block of CR 325 West Saturday evening just after 6:30pm.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Wells was the first to arrive and found the victim unconscious in the living area with severe upper body injuries. Phillip L. Jones, 53, was discovered in the basement near an ax handle and taken into custody. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division were called to assist at the scene.
The victim was transported to a regional hospital for treatment, where he remains in critical condition. Jones was medically cleared and then taken to La Porte County Jail. On July 29, Detective Justin Gorny filed a probable cause affidavit, leading to Jones’ charges in La Porte County Circuit Court. He faces one count of Aggravated Battery (Level 3 Felony) and Domestic Battery (Level 5 Felony). Jones remains in custody with a $25,005 bond.
