Avery County, NC – Residents in Avery County are urged to brace for frigid conditions this morning as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, wind chill values are expected to plunge as low as 10 below zero due to gusty winds and sub-freezing temperatures. Such extreme conditions can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and pose a significant risk of hypothermia without proper precautions.
The advisory covers areas including Banner Elk, Newland, and Ingalls. The National Weather Service advises residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and wear a hat and gloves. Pets should be brought indoors to ensure their safety.
Travelers are also encouraged to exercise caution and prepare for potential delays caused by icy conditions and severe cold.
