Washington, D.C. — Asteroid 99942 Apophis is expected to safely pass by Earth in April 2029, but scientists are closely monitoring its path due to potential encounters with other space objects. Apophis, which has been studied for its near-Earth trajectory, will come within 10,000 kilometers of asteroid 4544 Xanthus in December 2026.
According to The Planetary Science Journal, while a direct collision is unlikely, debris from Xanthus could impact Apophis and alter its course. Experts are assessing other possible encounters with smaller asteroids before 2029 to ensure no changes affect its path toward Earth.
Researchers recommend continued observation leading up to the asteroid’s close approach.
