Arlington Heights, IL – The Arlington Heights Police Department proudly introduced its newest member, K9 Atlas, during a ceremony at a Village Board Meeting on Tuesday night.

According to a press release from the Arlington Heights Police Department, Mayor Hayes administered the Oath of Office to K9 Atlas, a 2 ½-year-old German Shepherd imported from Germany. This special breed was selected for its temperament, suitability for job functions, and personality that aligns with the Police Department’s and community’s expectations.

K9 Atlas and his handler, Officer Jeffrey Heffernan, completed rigorous training through the Kane County Sheriff’s Department K9 Program. This training is essential to ensure that both K9 and handler meet the certification standards required by Illinois law. Officer Heffernan, a seasoned member of the department since 2018, has been recognized for his dedication to law enforcement and his exemplary performance.

K9 Atlas is the seventh dual-purpose patrol dog in the department’s history, joining a legacy that began in the late 1970s. The K9 unit primarily focuses on narcotics detection, a vital aspect of the department’s operations, and is funded largely through law enforcement asset forfeitures. This program aims to enhance public safety and combat illegal drug activity in Arlington Heights.

The Arlington Heights community eagerly anticipates the positive impact K9 Atlas will bring to local law enforcement efforts.
