Arlington Heights, IL – Two police officers are recovering at home after a garbage truck explosion in Arlington Heights on December 6. The incident, which also briefly sidelined a firefighter, remains under investigation.
According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the explosion likely stemmed from uncontrolled combustion in the truck’s hopper. This combustion reportedly ignited compressed natural gas (CNG) tanks. The firefighter involved has since returned to duty.

The department thanked the community for their support and released video footage of the incident from a body-worn camera and a dash-mounted squad car camera. The videos provide insight into the rapid response of emergency personnel.
