Conway, Arkansas – Residents across parts of central and eastern Arkansas face several more days of dangerous heat, with little relief before conditions become even more intense by Wednesday. Heat index values are expected to reach as high as 109 degrees through early Wednesday, followed by the potential for values climbing to 112 degrees through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Faulkner, White, Monroe and Woodruff counties, including Conway, Searcy, Brinkley, Clarendon, Augusta, McCrory, Beebe and Cotton Plant. An Extreme Heat Watch then takes effect Wednesday morning and continues through Thursday evening as even more dangerous heat settles into the region.
The combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people working outdoors, older adults, young children and those without reliable air conditioning. Multiple consecutive days of extreme heat will also increase stress on the body, making hydration and cooling more important with each passing day.
Residents should drink plenty of water throughout the day, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, wear lightweight clothing and spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned buildings. Employers with outdoor crews should schedule frequent breaks in shaded or cooled areas. Check on elderly neighbors and anyone who may be especially vulnerable to prolonged heat exposure.
The National Weather Service warns that additional heat products may be issued as the event unfolds. Continue monitoring forecasts through Thursday, as dangerous heat is expected to remain the dominant weather hazard across central Arkansas.
