Amarillo Weather: Triple-Digit Heat Continues With Major to Extreme Heat Risk This Week

Amarillo, Texas – Dangerous triple-digit heat will continue across the Texas Panhandle today and well into next week, with temperatures climbing as high as 111 degrees and heat stress building after several consecutive days of extreme conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, afternoon highs today will range from 99 to 107 degrees, with only a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm across parts of the region. Heat risk remains in the major to extreme category, meaning anyone without adequate hydration or cooling faces an increased risk of heat-related illness.

Communities including Amarillo, Borger, Dumas, Dalhart, Perryton, Guymon, Stratford and Canadian are expected to see highs exceeding 100 degrees through much of the upcoming week. Palo Duro Canyon is forecast to reach 107 degrees today, creating especially hazardous conditions for hikers and anyone spending extended time outdoors.

The hottest stretch arrives Monday and Tuesday, when temperatures are forecast to peak between 103 and 111 degrees, while overnight lows remain in the upper 60s and 70s, offering limited relief.

Residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, drink water frequently even before feeling thirsty, and take regular breaks in air-conditioned spaces. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

The prolonged heat wave is expected to continue through at least Thursday, and additional heat advisories or warnings may be issued if dangerous conditions persist.
