Amarillo, Texas – A strong cold front is expected to move through the Texas Panhandle late Thursday into early Friday, bringing sharply colder temperatures and possible snow.

According to the National Weather Service office in Amarillo, temperatures will fall quickly behind the front, with conditions potentially becoming the coldest of the season so far across the Panhandle. After the front passes, a separate weather system could move into the region, increasing the chance for snow beginning Friday and continuing into Saturday.

Forecasters currently estimate a 20 to 40 percent chance of snow during that time frame, though confidence in exact snowfall amounts and timing remains low. The National Weather Service emphasized that the forecast is still five to six days out, and uncertainty remains as models continue to adjust.

Residents are encouraged to stay aware of forecast updates as the picture becomes clearer later this week. Rapidly falling temperatures could impact travel, outdoor activities, and exposed infrastructure, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

The developing cold snap may be especially noticeable for commuters, students, and workers traveling early Friday, as wind chills could make conditions feel even colder shortly after the front arrives.

Officials stressed that while snow is not guaranteed, preparation now can help reduce disruptions if winter weather develops.
