Alton, Illinois – Police Shootout: Suspect Killed, Officer and K9 Critically Injured

Alton, IL – A suspect was killed, and an officer was injured during a shootout early Thursday morning in Alton. The incident occurred around 6:05 a.m. in the 700 block of E. 6th Street when Alton Police officers engaged in gunfire with a suspect. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

An Alton Police officer was struck during the exchange and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Additionally, a police canine was critically injured and is receiving care at a veterinary hospital.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the Alton Police Department requested assistance from the ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6. ISP will lead the investigation into the use of force involved in the incident. After completing their inquiry, the findings will be turned over to the Madison State’s Attorney’s Office for further review.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released.
