Huntsville, Alabama – Strong storms and soaking rains will stretch across North Alabama starting Sunday afternoon, with impacts likely to disrupt travel on key routes like U.S. 72 and U.S. 231 through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, showers and thunderstorms will develop after 1 p.m. Sunday, with the highest rain chances between 1 p.m. and midnight. Gusts could reach 20 mph, and rainfall may total up to half an inch in some areas, especially during thunderstorms. A second wave of heavy showers returns Monday morning and persists into Tuesday.

Huntsville will reach a high of 74°F Sunday under mostly cloudy skies. East-southeast winds will increase through the afternoon. By Monday, conditions worsen: rain becomes widespread before 7 a.m., and thunderstorms are likely through the evening with a 90% chance of precipitation and a high near 75°F.

Travelers should avoid flooded roads, especially along lower-lying routes like U.S. 431 and neighborhood streets in Madison County. Drivers should use extra caution during afternoon hours Sunday and Monday morning commute windows.

Rain chances remain elevated Tuesday (80%), but relief follows. By Tuesday night, skies begin to clear with a low near 63°F. Wednesday and Thursday bring a brief break with sunny skies and highs near 87°F and 89°F, respectively. A return to storm chances is possible by Friday.
