Buffalo, NY – A freeze warning is in effect overnight May 11–12 across much of western New York, with temperatures expected to drop into the upper 20s.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the warning runs from midnight through 9 a.m. Tuesday and includes Buffalo, Jamestown, Batavia, Geneseo, Olean, and Wellsville.
The warning covers Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties, where clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall well below freezing by early morning.
Forecasters warn of widespread frost and freeze conditions developing overnight, especially in inland and rural areas where temperatures are expected to be coldest before sunrise.
The primary concern is significant damage to agriculture and vegetation. Sensitive plants and crops could be killed, and unprotected outdoor plumbing may also be at risk due to freezing temperatures.
Residents are urged to take immediate precautions by covering or bringing plants indoors and protecting exposed pipes. Outdoor water systems should be drained or wrapped to prevent freezing and potential damage.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing after 9 a.m. Tuesday, ending the freeze threat by mid-morning.
