Buffalo, NY – Erie County officials are urging residents to review and strengthen their online passwords as part of a broader reminder tied to World Password Day.
According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, strong, unique passwords are one of the most effective ways to prevent hacking and protect against fraud. Officials emphasize that passwords should include a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters to make them harder to guess or crack.
The reminder comes as cyber threats and identity theft cases continue to impact individuals nationwide. Law enforcement says weak or reused passwords remain one of the most common vulnerabilities exploited by hackers.
Authorities recommend avoiding easily guessed information such as names, birthdays, or common words. Instead, residents are encouraged to use longer, more complex combinations and consider using password managers to securely store login credentials.
Officials also suggest enabling multi-factor authentication whenever possible, adding an extra layer of protection beyond just a password.
The sheriff’s office shared the message as part of ongoing efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness across Erie County and Western New York.
Residents are encouraged to take a few minutes today to update passwords on important accounts, including banking, email, and social media platforms.
