South Bend, IN – A young red fox kit is recovering after being admitted to a northern Indiana wildlife rehabilitation center this week, as officials warn of a growing threat impacting local wildlife.

According to Humane Indiana Wildlife, the fox was brought in from the South Bend Airport area earlier this week and treated for a medical condition that required immediate care. Staff say the animal was otherwise in good health and received treatment, including antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, to prevent complications.

While the kit is now stable, wildlife officials say the case highlights a broader and more concerning trend. The organization reports that several fox kits admitted this year showed signs consistent with rodenticide poisoning, a toxic exposure that can be fatal—especially for young animals.

Experts say rodenticides, commonly used to control mice and rat populations, can unintentionally harm predators like foxes that feed on contaminated prey. Symptoms observed in affected animals have included lethargy, anemia, and abnormal blood clotting.

Wildlife officials emphasize that young animals are particularly vulnerable due to their size and development. In some cases, exposure can also occur indirectly through nursing mothers.

Humane Indiana Wildlife is urging residents to consider alternative pest control methods and avoid the use of poisons that can spread through the food chain.

The fox kit continues to be monitored as it recovers.
