Indianapolis, IN – Indiana State Police say a specialized team of commercial vehicle enforcement troopers has recovered more than $11 million worth of stolen cargo this year as cargo theft investigations continue across the state.
According to the Indiana State Police, troopers assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) recently completed advanced cargo theft training and have been conducting investigations throughout north-central, central and south-central Indiana.
Since April 2026, investigators have recovered approximately 12 semi-trailer loads of stolen cargo, with an estimated value exceeding $11 million. Officials said multiple local and federal law enforcement agencies have assisted in the investigations, and several suspects have been arrested or detained on criminal charges.
State police say cargo theft has become an increasingly sophisticated crime involving organized groups that exploit the complexities of interstate trucking. Investigators warned that criminals commonly use forged documents, stolen U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) numbers, fraudulent carrier identities, and manipulated electronic logging device data to disguise stolen shipments.
ISP also urged trucking companies and shippers to watch for warning signs, including transportation rates that are well below industry standards, vehicles displaying temporary or poor-quality company markings, mismatched carrier contact information, and unexpected requests to reroute freight already in transit.
Authorities recommend verifying carrier information directly with legitimate transportation companies before releasing cargo.
The investigations remain ongoing, and Indiana State Police said no additional case-specific information is being released at this time. Anyone who believes they have been the victim of cargo theft or has information related to cargo theft is encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency or the nearest Indiana State Police post.
