Joliet, IL – Drivers in Will County are facing delays today after an emergency lane closure on eastbound Interstate 80 near Center Street in Joliet and Rockdale.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the right lane of eastbound I-80 is for emergency pavement repairs, with crews working to reopen it by the evening rush hour. However, officials caution that additional time may be needed for the concrete to properly set, potentially extending delays.

Westbound I-80 remains unaffected, but congestion is expected to build throughout the day on the eastbound side, especially during peak travel times across the Joliet area and the greater Chicago metro.

In addition to the emergency repairs, IDOT says inspections are beginning on the I-80 bridges over the Des Plaines River. These inspections are scheduled to continue through May 23, weather permitting, and will involve daily lane closures between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with possible Saturday work.

Officials say at least one lane in each direction will remain open during inspection periods, but drivers should still anticipate slower travel and shifting traffic patterns.

Motorists, especially those operating large trucks, are encouraged to consider alternate interstate routes, as local roads may not be suitable for heavy or wide vehicles.

Drivers traveling through Joliet, Rockdale, and surrounding Will County communities should allow extra time and remain alert in work zones.
