Mokena, IL – Residents in Mokena and surrounding Will County communities are being warned about solicitation phone calls that may be causing confusion about where donations are going.
According to the Mokena Police Department, multiple residents and business owners have reported receiving calls requesting financial contributions that callers claim are connected to the department. Officials emphasized that the Mokena Police Department does not solicit monetary donations and is funded through taxpayer dollars.
Authorities clarified that the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, a union representing officers, may conduct fundraising efforts independently. However, any donations made through these calls go directly to the union and do not support the day-to-day operations or services of the police department.
Police say while the union is legally allowed to solicit funds, the calls have led to misunderstandings among residents who may believe they are donating directly to local law enforcement services.
Officials are encouraging anyone who receives such a call to ask questions about where the money is going and which organization is benefiting. Residents who are uncertain or have concerns are advised to contact the Mokena Police Department directly for clarification.
The department says increased awareness can help prevent confusion as these calls continue.
