Western Illinois – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for the western regions of Illinois, effective until 8:00 PM CDT, encompassing Putnam and Bureau counties among others. This alert warns of a strong likelihood for tornado formation, with additional threats including significant hail and damaging winds. The watch affects a densely populated area with over 2.3 million residents, 1,172 schools, and 85 hospitals under potential threat.

According to the NWS, the current atmospheric conditions are highly conducive to the development of severe thunderstorms that can spawn tornadoes. With the possibility of hail reaching two inches in diameter and wind gusts of up to 70 MPH, residents are urged to exercise caution and stay informed about the latest weather updates. Local authorities may issue further instructions as the situation evolves.

Community members are encouraged to review safety plans, ensure that emergency kits are ready, and identify the nearest shelter locations. During a tornado watch, staying inside, away from windows, and being prepared to move to a safe area quickly is critical. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available from weather services and emergency management officials.
