Grant Park, Illinois – Fire crews responded to a garbage truck fire Wednesday afternoon in rural Kankakee County, where quick action helped prevent significant damage.
According to the Grant Park Fire Protection District, the incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. on the west side of the district. Crews arriving on scene found that the garbage truck driver had already offloaded a portion of the burning trash onto the ground in an effort to stop the fire from spreading to the vehicle.
Firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the flames, focusing on the pile of debris that had been dumped. Officials said the fire was successfully brought under control, and damage to the garbage truck itself was minimal.
To ensure all hotspots were fully extinguished, the Sumner Township road commissioner responded with heavy equipment. A backhoe was used to spread out the debris, allowing crews to thoroughly douse remaining smoldering material.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, and no other vehicles were involved.
